An emerald cut diamond is a rectangular or square-shaped stone with trimmed (cut) corners and long, linear facets. Unlike brilliant cuts like the radiant-cut that is designed for maximum sparkle, emerald cuts use a step-cut facet pattern. This means facets arranged like stairs descending into the diamond.

Emerald-cut diamonds can be rectangular and square and traditionally have 57 facets, arranged to emphasize clarity and balance: 25 facets on the crown (the top of the diamond) and 32 facets on the pavilion (the bottom).

One of the defining characteristics of an emerald cut diamond is its transparency. The open facet design means inclusions and imperfections are more visible compared to brilliant cuts like round or radiant diamonds. For this reason, emerald cut diamonds typically shine best with higher clarity grades, to help highlight their clean lines and crisp reflections.

The elongated shape of an emerald cut diamond creates a lengthening effect on the finger, making it especially flattering in engagement rings.
