Wearing the engagement ring on the left hand goes back to a Roman myth: It was long believed that there was a vein of love - the "vena amoris" - leading directly from the fourth finger of the left hand to the heart.

Here is a list of countries that adopted this tradition, and wear the engagement ring on the left hand:

Where does the engagement ring go during the wedding ceremony?

Where does the engagement ring go after the wedding?

Most countries keep the engagement ring on the hand where it was first worn - whether left or right - and simply stack it with the wedding band after the wedding ceremony. This includes:

  • The United States
  • The UK
  • France
  • and many others.

In some countries, however, things are slightly more "complicated":

  • In Switzerland, the engagement ring stays on the right hand while the wedding band is worn on the left hand.
  • In Germany, the engagement ring is worn on the left hand until the marriage. It then moves to the right hand, where it is stacked with the wedding band. This can cause ring size issues: the engagement ring used to fit the left hand and may become too big or too small for the right hand, depending on whether you are right or left-handed.

But ultimately, this should be an individual choice: you should decide on which hand to wear your engagement ring and your wedding band, whether together or on separate fingers and/or hands.
